I started a blog on the 23rd of October last year recording every step in trying to resolve a "problem" I had with Nero- http://uncledave.my.nero.com/blog/7201010 .

To summarise Nero Home and ShowTime can connect to MediaHome and play movies. Neither will show movies served by Twonky which is also a UPnP server. I wanted to know why.

It turns out that the reason MediaHome works and not Twonky is that MediaHome transcodes any files to MPEG-2 which is the only file format that Home and and Showtime will accept from a UPnP server.

Man I wish they had told me that in the first place!

Hint to nero - update your documentation.

Since giving up is not in my nature.... we try support again. I have already blogged the results of my last support request. If the request ever gets answered I'll post a summary. Has anybody gotten a TV card working with MediaHome? If so can you please let me know which card and driver version. I am trying to get a Twinhan Cable card (http://www.twinhan.com/product_cable_2033.asp) working in the UK. I've found the XML config file and modified for UK cable frequencies. When I run the TV scan MH sees the card and the new frequencies. It says that it is scanning and then, in typical Nero style, does nothing, no progress, no failure, no log file, no nothing.

Yes I do know that my card is not in the supported device section - MH supposedly supports BDA so the device should not make a difference. I also accept that the card may make a difference, hence asking if anybody else has been able to get this combination working.

btw - are there any cable cards certified?

A month or so ago I posted a blog - "Request to MVPs posted by UncleDave in category Support at 11/07/07 13:29"

I wanted assistance in setting up the following functions in Scout in order to make them available in MediaHome:

Web radios
Web TV
Audio casts
Video casts
Image casts

Now these are specific options available within Scout, all I want is an example for each of the functions. I don't have a problem, other than no documentation or support from Nero, I just want to get the functionality offered in the tool working. One of the MVPs took up the challenge to help me. His reply to my query is:

"To make a long story short, the combination of applications, and the way the program API is made, makes it hard to completely integrate all the features you ask into all the different setups." I am only asking for assistance in setting up standard (?) features.

"I have yet to find anyone that integrates the use of Nero Scout, without having a problem, As you had stated before, I am aware of some new added features that may make it more stable, but i have not tested them.". Fair enough Ken, thank you for trying! Surely Nero has tested the functionality of these different features before releasing Scout? If they have why can't they just give me the setups that they used in their QA process or better still why can't they document them?

If a MVP can not get the support from Nero to just get a feature working what hope is there for the rest of us?????????

From what I have seen, and use, I can't see to much value in the upgrade for me. Would I upgrade if the discount was 50%, probably not. I think in this instance there is no incentive to upgrade. In fact I have been getting little reminders that there is a discounted Acdsee upgrade offer that I can advantage of. Thanks guys but there is nothing realy that is worth upgrading - your previous product was fine and does the job for me, as does Nero. The only software that I do upgrade regularly is UltraEdit.

Maybe this is part of the Vista argument - why upgrade for the sake of it? Hell I was on Windows 2000 until about 18 months ago, the only reason that I went to XP was because 2000 was too flaky with my motherboard's RAID drivers. Other than that there was no reason for me to upgrade.

I wonder though - what should a responable discount for an upgrade be?

Problem with Nero Home

I have two media servers on one PC. I can watch movies when Nero streams them but not when Twonky does. I am posting the problem on both the Twonky forum, here and raising it with Nero support. I'll keep you up to date with the replies

I have tried putting on all the log options on Twonky and the only thing that SEEMS to make sense to me is the HTTP error. On searching this forum the only postings I can find to that error involve networking issues, I have followed the advice from those postings to no avail. While I understand that this problem could entirely be related to Nero I would like to be able to confirm that there is no problem with Twonky.

Therefore I would like to know what the error above actually means, what logs I should enable and what I should be looking out for in the logs.

I have a Windows 2003 server running Twonky (4.4) and Nero MediaHome (7.10.1.0). As an end point device I have Nero Home running on a XP Pro machine. I am unable to watch any movies served by Twonky on the XP machine but can watch movies served by Nero.

I appreciate that Twonky is not supported by Nero but I would like to understand why Nero Home will not show movies served by the Twonky server. Nero Home will play music and show photos served by the Twonky server. Is it possible to switch on debugging or log gin in Nero Home in order to understand why it is behaving as it does.

I have un-installed all Nero products from the XP Pro machine, used the cleaning tool and performed a standard install.

I can not believe how frustrated I am getting with Nero. This has got to be the worst support ever! When I look at the suite of products I think - WOW great idea, good tools, that makes sense. But when I try to use them it appears that the only things that work are the CD/DVD writing utilities, everything else is "almost there" or if it does work it's undocumented so I can't use it.

Allow me to expand on my rant.

1) This website - I honestly wonder what's the point! I can see a lot of people enjoying it and it looks like a really nice community...but! There is no way to search for any text - Mr Chuck has some great posts but the only way to find what may be of interest is to read each of his posts ..... Please can I have a text search - even a tag search would be a start! On one hand I'd rather your developers were fixing the core products, on the other maybe I'll get the support that I expect/want/need! I have seen people flamed for posting messages like this - I am blogging this out of desperation....

2) There is no forum for any of the core Nero products - if you are serious about the community then realise that we are here because we get or see value in your software. People like me are going to moan out of frustration - I have spent weeks trying to setup Web Radio in Nero Scout - there is precisely zero documentation or help to be found. Give me somewhere to ask the question! Just show me how to setup one radio station, give me an example and I'll work out the rest.

3) Your support - well that is just about non existent - one week ago I asked this question "When installing the upgrade and trying to uninstall via control panel I get the following error "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are correct". This is a Windows Server 2003 R2 machine (SP2)." Nero's' response to date is - nothing. Why am I not surprised?

4) Your product offering - great suite of products, but I'd like to run the Home Server on my file server and everything else on my PC - how about looking at that model? I am not going to pay for two full licences! How about a home licence that lets people slice and dice the products? What product are you going to roll out for Windows Home Server? Are you going to?

5) I have ripped my DVD collection that scout has indexed (and that little dear can really roast a CPU if it wants to 100% for hours) and published on my home network with Media Home . Some DVDs won't play via Nero Home on my PC, I click on the folder name it opens the screen with recorder controls then - "failed to play the video disk". I Open up ShowTime, click on Media Files, click on MediaHome Network (all movies) click on the same movie and it plays in ShowTime..... any ideas? BTW when does one use the mouse or keyboard in ShowTime or Home - never been able to figure that one out - sorry I don't have a remote on my PC.

6) Scout - I remove items from the database and they just keep coming back <----- frustration!!!!!

That's enough of a rant for now. Why am I moaning? I paid money for this product and expect some support.

But more importantly I think the concept is great and would really like the software to work.
