What I Want for Christmas - The Motorola Droid

So, as you may have guessed, the Nero Dude is something of a gadget head. I dig cool gizmos. And one of the coolest of the cool for this holiday season has got to be the new Motorola Droid.

Based on Android technology, the Droid has got both a touch screen and a qwerty keyboard, so those of you who are all thumbs can get a workout either way. It also comes with navigation based on Google Maps technology, and is supported in general by Google, which is exciting for those of us waiting for more Google involvement in the mobile arena. It's even got a 5 megapixel, low-light camera integrated into it. Pretty nifty stuff – we're talking about a real iPhone killer here, folks.

But what really makes this phone cool is its software, especially Motorola Media Link – powered by Nero, thank you very much – which gives the phone a whole host of new abilities and ways to talk to your computer. Basically, MML works kinda like a mini version of Nero Move it, for the Droid: it allows you to organize, sync, back up, and generally manage the content on your phone. Since the Droid can handle photos, music, videos and data files, you'll need MML to help the phone achieve its full potential. But MML, did I mention it was designed by the boy geniuses here at Nero, makes your life easy. With just a few simple clicks or drags, you can easily take care of anything you want to do with your phone.

There are other tools, as well. Integrated into MML is the ability to quickly crop, rotate and do basic edits on photos, to create photo and video albums for sharing with friends and for easy storage, and to directly share media to your favorite social networking sites. Heck, you can even use MML to take your music and create custom ringtones for your phone.

The best news? MML is a totally free download, so don't think you'll have to buy something extra just to make your phone kick butt. Yes, at Nero we're always doing our best to bring you, the customer, a great value at the lowest price possible… in this case, zero.

Getting the Most Out of the Ask Toolbar

So, those of you who've recently installed Nero 9 Reloaded, or the latest versions of Nero MediaHome and Nero Move it may have noticed that it comes with a very useful piece of software for your web browser: the Nero Ask Toolbar.

This toolbar integrates into your browser and makes it easy for you to quickly do tasks involving Nero and My Nero without leaving the website you're already on! With the new version, you can use the Nero Ask Toolbar to upload video, photo, and blogging content directly to My Nero. You can even use it to begin a CD/DVD burning task right from your web browser!

Pretty useful stuff. I played around with the toolbar over the past week, and I have to say it couldn't be simpler to use. Just a single click of a button will open up a host of options relating to My Nero, Nero Burning ROM, and other stuff -- not to mention Ask.com web searches.

You'll need to make sure your My Nero login info is put into the Nero Ask Toolbar so that it knows who you are. But from there, you can quickly upload videos and photos you've come across on the internet to your personal blog on My Nero to share them with the world. Even better, you can securely enter your Nero software registration info via the toolbar, ensuring that it's safely stored on My Nero without a lot of hassle. From then on, it'll be there when you need it for tech support or upgrades.

You can also, of course, search for websites using the toolbar's search field. These searches are just as quick and reliable as they would be going through Ask.com's site, but with the added convenience of them always being on the top navigation of your browser window.

In general, the Nero Ask Toolbar has always been a helpful feature included with Nero software, but the new level of integration with our software and My Nero functionality, in a practical sense, has made it 1000 percent better for the average Nero user. If you're someone who likes to share multimedia content, or someone who really wants to get the most out of your Nero software purchase, I definitely recommend this nifty little add-on, as it will enhance your experience greatly with a very small footprint.

Creación de videos con Nero Vision: Captura de video

Nero Vision puede parecer intimidante con todas las opciones de edición y creación de video, pero Nero se ha esforzado para que utilizar el programa sea lo más sencillo posible para el usuario promedio.   Si le interesa utilizarlo pero aún no ha podido comprender más que los aspectos básicos de StartSmart, le daré un tutorial rápido sobre las funciones para que pueda comenzar.   Con el tiempo podrá darle una mayor utilidad aunque en este blog sólo se brinda el punto de partida.   Esta primera sección comenzará con la captura de video desde la cámara.

Introducción
Primero, se debe iniciar Nero Vision (trabajaré con Nero Vision 5 en este blog, pero cualquier versión reciente será compatible con el tema que estoy tratando aquí).   Desde aquí, elegirá capturar video de uno de los dispositivos (es decir, elegirá transferir video que ha grabado en una cámara al equipo local) o abrir un video que tiene en un disco duro.   Por ahora, supongamos que capturará un video.

Primero y principal: asegúrese de que la cámara está conectada al equipo (generalmente, a través de USB), y que Windows la reconoce.   Si esto no sucede, deberá acudir a la instalación de controladores y solución de problemas de Windows, que, desafortunadamente, no se tratan en este blog. Si desea capturar video que ya ha grabado, el proceso es muy similar. Editando vídeos com o Nero Vision

O Nero Vision pode parecer muito complicado com todas as suas opções de edição de vídeo, mas a Nero trabalhou muito para tornar o programa o mais fácil possível de se usar. Se você está interessado em usar o Nero para editar seus vídeos mas não conseguiu sair do básico, eu vou te dar algumas dicas sobre as funções do Nero Vision. Há muitos outros recursos que você poderá usar mais adiante, mas por enquanto vou te dar somente algumas dicas básicas. Nesta primeira dica vou falar sobre como capturar os vídeos da sua câmera.

Começando

A primeira coisa a fazer é executar o Nero Vision (Para este post eu usarei o Nero Vision 5, mas qualquer versão atual também poderá ser usada). A partir daí, você poderá escolher entre capturar o vídeo de um dispositivo (ou seja, transferir a filmagem de uma filmadora para o seu computador) e utilizar um vídeo já disponível no seu computador. Por ora vamos capturar o vídeo da filmadora.

Capturando o vídeo

Primeiro: certifique-se de que a filmadora esteja conectada ao computador (geralmente via USB) e que ela é reconhecida pelo Windows. Se ela não for reconhecida, você precisará instalar os drivers que vieram com ela, assunto que está além deste post. Se tudo estiver OK, clique em "Capturar Vídeo para o Disco Rígido" na tela inicial do Nero Vision.

A partir daí temos duas opções. Você pode gravar a imagem em tempo real da filmadora (para usá-la como webcam, por exemplo), ou transferir alguma filmagem que você já tenha feito. Se você quer usar a primeira opção, basta verificar se a imagem da filmadora aparece na janela de vídeo do Nero Vision, e então clique no botão Gravar. O botão gravar é o botão redondo e vermelho. Depois de terminado, clique no botão Parar e você já poderá editar a filmagem. Não se esqueça de configurar a qualidade e o formato da captura usando as opções disponíveis no lado direito da janela do Nero Vision - falaremos sobre essas opções nas próximas postagens.

Para transferir uma filmagem que você já tenha feito, o processo será semelhante. Selecione o dispositivo desejado no Nero Vision (você pode fazer isso usando o menu "Dispositivo de Captura" logo acima da janela de vídeo). Em seguida, escolha a qualidade e o formato usando os menus correspondentes e o botão Configurar. Depois de escolher as opções desejadas, clique em Gravar e pronto! But instead checking out sports highlights or three-minute clips, he watches New York Yankees games and hourlong episodes of “The West Wing.”

Mr. Gulranjani has been able to watch longer programming on his iPhone since he began using a software application from EchoStar Communication Corp. subsidiary Sling Media. “I didn’t think I would get used to watching an hour or 30-minute show on my phone, but I’m hooked,” he says.

Until recently, cellphones’ video capability was limited to short clips, and the video selection was tiny. But now, people can watch full network and cable-TV shows and long movies.

The change is being driven by the arrival of new smart phones—the iPhone, Palm Inc.’s Pre and Nokia Corp.’s N-series phones, for instance—with big screens that make watching longer TV shows and movies on small devices more tolerable. At the same time, services such as Sling Media’s Mobile Player, CBS Corp.’s TV.com and Nero Inc.’s Move It have begun providing ways for consumers to view everything from live sports events to “Project Runway” on their phones. These services let people use hand-held devices either to retrieve videos stored on their digital video recorders at home or to gain access to large libraries of long-form content owned by independent media producers.

In May, for instance, Sling Media launched its Sling Media Mobile Player for the iPhone. The service lets people send TV shows, DVR recordings and other media to their phones. For between $200 and $300, users get a device called a Slingbox, which connects to a cable or satellite set-top box, as well as software for the phone. Sling says nearly a million people have signed up for the service on the iPhone.

Also in May, TV.com launched a cellphone video-watching service, which people can access by downloading free software to their mobile phone. Using the software, consumers can play full episodes of TV series such as “Gossip Girl” and cult favorites like the original “Star Trek.”

So far, the increase in video options hasn’t boosted mobile-video viewership. According to Nielsen Co., mobile viewership is flat from a year ago, when about 13 million people watched videos on their cellphones.

That’s partly because smart phones like the iPhone and Nokia’s N97 remain a small portion of the overall cellphone market. Only about 18% of the 270 million cellphone users in the U.S. have smart phones, according to Nielsen. Most other cellphones still have small screens and hard-to-reach buttons, says Roger Entner, a Nielsen analyst. The screens of smart phones like the iPhone or the Palm Pre measure more than than 3 inches diagonally—nearly an inch bigger than the screen of the Motorola Razr V8 and some other flip-model phones.

Ira Frimere, portfolio manager for Nokia, says the company has worked to improve the video-viewing experience. For some of its smart phones, Nokia now includes a kickstand—a kind of mini-tripod—to allow hands-free viewing, as well as software that gives people the option of horizontal or vertical viewing. Nokia has also added memory and processing power to some phones in order to make images appear smoother and more fluid on the screen, Mr. Frimere says.

The new mobile-TV services aren’t hassle-free. Watching a movie on a phone consumes a lot of bandwidth—the capacity of a communications channel—and that limits where some of the new services can be used. For instance, Sling Media’s iPhone service is limited to hot spots, or public areas that provide wireless Internet access, which often have greater network capacity than cellphone networks. Consumers can’t access the service using AT&T Inc.’s wireless cellphone network.

When watching some mobile-TV services on cellular networks, consumers can run into “jitter”—that is, a video’s quality becomes degraded and hard to view, with images freezing or not appearing at all. Daren Gill, general manager of Veveo Inc.’s vTap service, which powers TV.com mobile, recommends that people generally watch TV on their phones at a hot spot.

Also, some of the video services require a lot of power, which can drain a phone’s battery life. Phones with high-resolution screens, which offer better picture quality, use as much as twice as much energy as a standard phone would need.

Some of the mobile-TV services don’t allow people to transfer music videos or movies from another hand-held device such as an iPod or Sony Playstation Portable. Such transfers also require some technical know-how to get the videos to work.

To make such moves easier, media software company Nero introduced its Move It service in March. The software, which costs about $40 and can be downloaded to a phone, lets consumers move content between cellphones and other hand-held devices. It also takes care of technical issues like resizing video for a cellphone screen.

Kertis Henderson, 31, a software developer in Burlington, N.C., started using Move It about a month ago to transfer episodes of “M*A*S*H” from his iPod touch to his HTC Corp. Touch phone. “I didn’t think I would have an easy experience transferring some of my videos to my phone, but [Move It] makes the process really simple,” he says.

Authoring Videos with Nero Vision - Capturing Video

Nero Vision can seem daunting with all its options for video editing and authoring, but Nero's worked hard to make the program as easy to use as possible for the average dude. If you're interested in using Nero for video editing, but haven't been able to get beyond the basics of StartSmart yet, I'm going to give you a quick walkthrough of some of the functionality here, so that you can get started. There's a lot more in-depth stuff you'll be able to do down the road, but in this blog I just want to give you a kick start. This first section will start with capturing video from your camera.

Getting Started

So, the first thing to do is start up Nero Vision (I'll be working with Nero Vision 5 for this blog, but any recent version will be pretty compatible with what I'm talking about here). From here, you're either going to want to capture video off of one of your devices (that is, you'll want to transfer video you've recorded on a camera and pull it over to your local computer), or you'll want to open a video that you've already got on your hard drive. For now, let's assume you're going to capture a video.

Capturing Video

First things first: make sure you've got your camera connected to your PC (usually via USB), and that it's being recognized by Windows. If it's not, you'll need to deal with driver installation and Windows troubleshooting, which are unfortunately outside the scope of this blog. But, assuming everything's hunky dory, you'll want to click the "Capture Video to Hard Drive" option from Nero Vision's opening screen.

From here, you've got two options. You can either record live video from your device directly to your hard disk (this is useful if you're using a webcam, for example), or you can simply capture video that you've already recorded. If you want to do the former, simply check to make sure the device is transmitting data to your PC (which you can check by looking at the video window and seeing if you're getting a live feed) and then click the record button on the console. FYI, the record button looks like a red circle with another white circle inside it. Once you're done recording, hit the stop button and you're ready to edit the video you've just captured. Don't forget that you can configure the quality and format of the video you'll be capturing by using the pull-down menus on the right side of your Nero Vision window -- we'll cover exactly what these options do in the next blog on this subject.

If you'd like to capture video you've already recorded, the process is very similar. Simply tell Nero Vision which device you'd like to capture from (you can select this from the pull-down menu above the video window labeled "Capture Device"). Then, configure the quality and format settings using the pulldowns and the "Configure" button, respectively. Once you're satisfied that you're getting the right video, just hit the record button, and you're all set. Vision will grab the video from your camera and put it on your hard drive.

One nifty thing to take note of: look for the little "stopwatch" button on the right of the recording console underneath the video window. This button allows you to capture or record video for a designated period of time. Just click it and tell Vision how long you'd like to record before it automatically stops, or for what periods of time you'd like to capture video from your device.

One you've gotten your video onto your hard disk, Vision will automatically give it a name (you can change the default filename by clicking on it once and typing the new name in the field), and will give you a prompt to move on to editing the video by clicking "Next." If you'd rather capture something else, or recapture the video in another format, just click the "Capture Another Video" option on the lefthand navigation. Otherwise, click next and move into the editing area of Nero Vision, which is where we'll pick up this blog series next time! Stay tuned.
