How to transfer film to digital

Kris' blog has sparked memories of my younger day when I was transferring film to VHS video tape. Here are some techniques I used that anyone can adapt to transferring film to a digital format .

Acquire a projector that matches the film reels you own.

In Kris's case, its 16mm sound film projector. Ebay.com has projectors and lamps/bulbs if needed.

Setup the projector and the digital camera as close together as possible. Use a fairly small projected image for best results at close range.

Typical Image size can be as small as 20 inches.

This close range will improve the image brightness.

Use a flat white wall or proper projection screen.

Use the 16mm projector's speaker which comes with a cable and put it behind a wall and record the audio from there to reduce projector noise.

Do the same with an external microphone attached to the Digital video camera. Place the mic near the remote speaker.

Start the camera, then the projector in total darkness.

The best time to do this is as night while everyone is asleep to eliminate noise and light. Remove all pets from the work area.

There are more elaborate setups using rear projection, a stretched sheet and a large mirror but the above process is simple and requires the least number of parts.

If your camera does not have a mic jack, you will need to change the configuration. Use a large sheet of plywood wrapped in a blanket to act as a wall between the projector and the camera. Run the projector's speaker around to the camera side. The blanketed-wall will dampen much of the noise.

Treo Audio File Transfer

Does anyone know of a way to transfer files using any Nero application to a Treo 650 using Pocket Tunes? (The device is compatible with pretty much everything else: WMP, Rhapsody, Yahoo, Audiobooks, Overdrive Media Console, etc.)

Convert & transfer video to your iPod with Recode

Nero Recode Digital can easily be used to convert and transfer video to your iPod.

First connect your iPod and open iTunes. If you don't have it set to manually manage songs change that 1st. In the latest versions of iTunes it's on the right of the screen under options.

Leave iTunes open. Open SmartStart and pick Recode under applications. Use the Recode DVD's and Videos to Nero Digital option if you have avi's, wmv or even vob's etc. Use the Recode Main Movie to Nero Digital if you are ripping it from a disc (non copy righted)

Under Nero Digital Category pick Apple iPod. Picking this will change the Nero Digital profile to iPod Video. Now click Import Files. Find & add the files you want.

Nero will now analyze them. Might take a minute or two.

If you want Nero to close iTunes when it finished transferring the file click on More>Options>Nero Digital Tab. Check the option to auto close iTunes after iPod transfer.

When done click next. By default the destination should list your iPod. If not then click on the scroll bar to select it. Click Burn.

You'll probably get a pop up about changing the iPod to manually manage music. If you've already done this click ok.

Now Nero is converting your video and will transfer it to your iPod when done. Too easy!
