Simpler Audio CD navigation

Have you ever found yourself winding through a long track on an audio CD to try to resume listening to the last few minutes? Then your finger slips and you have to start all over again from the beginning? Some players don't let you simply go to the end of the last track and fast wind backwards.

I record radio programs to play in the car to pass the time in my favourite traffic jams. Sods law declares that there will always be five minutes to go at the end of the CD every time I have to stop listening. And when I borrow my car back from my daughter in the morning you can bet that the CD won't be in the last position that I left it (I'm lucky if it is still in the player!).

To make navigating long CD tracks easier I always (when I remember) add a three second silence track at the end of the CD compilation. You can then skip to the silence track at the end of the CD and wind back from there.

To make a silence track use any recorder (Nero WaveEditor, SoundTrax, even Windows SoundRecorder). I dont think the format matters, nero will sort that out. My track is silence.mp3 (51kB). Just drop it in as the last track on your CD.

(I would have attached my silence file but I don't know how! Suggestions?)

Have fun,

ZZ

Does Nero save logs under Vista? Per Binkie

I opened a fresh blog so I could show an image of this issue under Vista.

Please refer back to Binkie7 for more info.

<a style="display:block;text-align:center;float: left" uri="media://m103/st0000/7201220" href="http://m103.my.nero.com/service/pic/media/x3yZ7201220/500x500/vista-nero-log0.jpeg" rel="lightbox[pic6d4434b4097f87b9d6bceee822fcc83c]" title="
vista-nero-log0.jpg
">

Under Vista, No log was saved, unless I clicked the button

I tried both ways and searched my hard drives for any new files made today.

No logs were produced unless I hit the SAVE LOG button

Simple, but secure steps to ensure a clean Nero installation

Many people probably are aware that it is best to disable Virus and/or Firewall software prior to installing a robust application such as Nero. This is largely due to the fact that DLL files (Dynamic Link Library files) can conflict with virus and firewall settings, thus causing a corrupted installations. One thing I have seen over the years when people disable their security is they forget to disable their internet connection. This is a HUGE mistake if you forget to disable your internet connection because your visible internet connection will now be attacked with worms and trojans immediately and will cause you much bigger problems then your sure to be corrupted Nero installation. Follow these very simple steps anytime you are installing Nero or upgrading Nero:

Disable your internet connection easiest by disable your Ethernet card or Wireless card via Network Connections and right clicking 'disable'

Disable your virus software (make sure they do not reactivate when you re-boot)

Disable your firewall software (make sure they do not reactivate when you re-boot)

Install your Nero software

Clean up your registry (another topic I will discuss later)

Re-boot your machine

Enable your firewall software

Enable your virus software

Enable your internet connection

Download or stream your favorite media with safety and confidence!

By definition, RAID-0 requires 2 or more hard drives of the same or similar size.
The data is "striped" across all drives in the array. This process allows the many drives to act as one drive, but the new drive-array is faster and bigger.

So what's needed for RAID-0?

You must have a RAID controller. This might be built into your motherboard (which is more common than ever these days) or you can buy a RAID add-on card. In both cases, You will be able to press a key-combination at boot to setup the raid type and pick drives involved.

TIP #1: Beginners, Do not try to install Windows to your RAID-0 for your 1st attempt at RAID. 1st timers are well advaised to add 2 or more drives and then setup the RAID-0 for your my documents, my pictures, my games folder.

TIP #2. Do not try to setup RAID with drives holding data. You will loose the data so use freshly formatted drives.

Start by checking your manual and motherboard maker's website for current RAID drivers and directions for setting up RAID for your machine. Print out the process, and download all files available. Burn to a CD or flash drive.

TIP#3 : BIOS UPDATES can include fixes and enhancements to RAID SETUP so check to see if a BIOS update is needed.

NOTE: Setting up RAID-0 is not a cut dry process. Check with your Raid controller maker's website.

INTEL is a popular mother-board maker that offers excellent documents on RAID: Intel Matrix Storage Manager and the RAID: Silicon Image*

It seems some are under the impression my nero is a burning forum. In some ways yes, but its also a community of nero users who share their passions, experiences, and ideas.

We also offer Nero Tips since this community is provided by NERO.

If you want "tech support" with NERO you need to contact tech support.

BUT... There are many experienced users and tech people here.. If you provide clear data about your problem, someone might be able to help you. The MVP group might also help (but are in way required to take tech support questions). The MVP group is made up of technical people who may have seen your issue. Anytime we see a tech problem on our own, we get it corrected and then share the results as Binkie did with this issue with A/V sync.

Tip #4: How to Add MEMORY to a Computer. (mvp)

#4. How to Add MEMORY to a Computer.

It’s a well-known fact that adding more MEMORY to a computer is the easiest, cheapest and most bang-for-the-buck upgrade that can be done by anyone who knows how to use a screwdriver and a little common sense.

To Determine what type of memory to buy, boot your PC and press the key that opens SETUP Or BIOS. Typically this is F1, F2, F10, or DELETE.

Look for the Memory ID LINE:

<a style="display:block;text-align:center;float: left" uri="media://m103/st0000/7200860" href="http://m103.my.nero.com/service/pic/media/nw987200860/500x500/ddr-c.jpeg" rel="lightbox[pic5140d70c63d1e98bd728a57708a5b751]" title="
ddr-c.jpg
">

You need to know the RAM TYPE (DDR or DD2) and you need to know the Speed.

Many computers can use a few different speeds but all the memory sticks in your machine will run at the speed of the slowest stick installed. SO Unless you are replacing all memory, you may want to buy the same speed that's in your machine right now. It will save you some money.

Consult your user-manual for speeds your computer can use if you want to buy something other than what's in your machine now.

If you can not determine the memory-type from the BIOS, consult your motherboard maker to find the memory type and speed.

Want a good price on memory? Visit http://www.tigerdirect.com or http://www.newegg.com

+++++++++++++++

Note: The terms DIMM, Memory-Stick, and RAM are all the same thing. A small circuit board with memory chips mounted on it. The format of these "sticks" changes over the years and new slang names devolop over the years.

DIMM is a technical acronym for Dual Inline Memory Module

RAM is a technical acronym for Random Access Memory

+++++++++++++++

<a style="display:block;text-align:center;float: left" uri="media://m103/st0000/7200833" href="http://m103.my.nero.com/service/pic/media/NaiP7200833/500x500/addmem1.jpeg" rel="lightbox[pic5140d70c63d1e98bd728a57708a5b751]" title="
addmem1.jpg
">

Once you have purchased the correct memory for your computer, follow these steps:

How to Install MEMORY:
1. Unplug power and all cables from your computer
2. Look at your case to determine how it opens. (Refer to your user guide if needed)
3. Lay it on its side and remove the side or open the case to expose the motherboard.
4. Locate the memory sockets.

<a style="display:block;text-align:center;float: left" uri="media://m103/st0000/7200861" href="http://m103.my.nero.com/service/pic/media/Z6UB7200861/500x500/ddr-msi.jpeg" rel="lightbox[pic5140d70c63d1e98bd728a57708a5b751]" title="
ddr-msi.jpg
">

5. There are locks on each side of the ram-socket that hinge in and out. to lock the MEMORY-Stick.
6. Open the locks on each side for the empty slot .
7. Notice the DIMM (memory-stick) has an off-center notch near the middle.

<a style="display:block;text-align:center;float: left" uri="media://m103/st0000/7200836" href="http://m103.my.nero.com/service/pic/media/Rvmd7200836/500x500/addmem2.jpeg" rel="lightbox[pic5140d70c63d1e98bd728a57708a5b751]" title="
addmem2.jpg
">

<a style="display:block;text-align:center;float: left" uri="media://m103/st0000/7200859" href="http://m103.my.nero.com/service/pic/media/Hs9Y7200859/500x500/ddr2.jpeg" rel="lightbox[pic5140d70c63d1e98bd728a57708a5b751]" title="
ddr2.jpg
">

8. Line up the off-center notch with the bump in the middle of the socket
9. Press firmly in until the lock-arms come up and lock into place. You will hear a distinctive click.

Close the cover and plug it all back in. When you 1st boot up, your computer will find the new memory. Some computers might display a message and even a beep-code to let you know the configuration has changed. If you get a message or a beep, read the screen. Odds are it will tell you to press a key to accept the new configuration. (in most cases it will just boot up without any prompt) . As soon as you hit the key, the PC will continue to boot up. The 1st boot might take a few seconds longer than normal as windows makes changes for the new memory but all boots after that will be normal. If you increase memory by a lot, boot time could be noticeably shorter than before the upgrade. Also: If you add a lot of memory, the delay before boot begins might seem longer as the BIOS tests all that new memory.

TIPS & Summary on Finding the Memory You Need.

How do I know what memory I need?

To buy memory you must know the TYPE and the SPEED.

You can look in your user-guide, or look it up on the computer maker's website.

Another option is to access the BIOS:
Boot up the PC and look for a note on the screen that says press (??? KEY) to enter SETUP.
This key is commonly F1, F2, F12, or DEL but can be anything.
Once in the BIOS, you can move around and look for the memory configuration.
This will refer to DIMM sockets or MEMORY Configuration.

You need to learn two things: Memory Speed (expressed in MHz) and Memory Type.
The memory types references are DDR2, DDR, 240-pin, 184-pin.
DDR or 184-pin memory is available in speeds expressed in MHz of 200,266,333, and 400. 200 is no longer available and your PC should support at least 2 different speeds of memory.
DDR2 memory or 240-pin is the current type and comes in speeds expressed in MHz of 400,533,667, and 800.

MrChuck's Video Crunching SPEED BOOSTERS (MVP)

Video Processing can take a long time. Here are my tips to trim those times.

How would you like to speed up that video-processing task?
Here are my personal tips for turbo charging your Video Crunching needs!

Watch my blogs for details on each of these tips.

#1. Add a 2nd hard drive and use it as your destination for video output file creation.

Moving the video dump off the OS-drive will increase performance. This idea really does help because the video's

Hard-drive-activity does not have to compete with the OS or the program that's processing your video.

#2. Move your Page file off the OS-Drive.
This helps with everything you do, but with video processing, its a big help. If the page file can run without sharing time with the the OS, you will see an improvement .

#3. DEFRAG OFTEN.
All disc-burning runs better when your hard drive is moving at top speed and a fragmented hard drive will always slow you down.

XP and 2000 users need to remember to run it manually. If you are running VISTA, you can schedule DEFRAG to run itself.

How to run Defrag: Right click your hard drive and pick properties > Tools > Defrag.

#4. Add More MEMORY.
This is the best bang for the buck upgrade you can do. Statistically speaking, any PC with more memory will run considerably faster than the same PC with less memory. If you are running 512MB or less, UPGRADE ASAP! Its a great idea. Adding memory is the easiest task that involves opening your computer. (See my blog on memory-install for assistance)

#5. Set Your Optical Drives to Ultra DMA (if possible).
Right click my-computer > Properties > device manager.
Find your disc controller > primary & secondary IDE channels.
Right-click > Properties > advanced settings > set the transfer mode to DMA. Do this for your OPTICAL DRIVE if it supports it.

#6. Setup RAID-0.
RAID-0 runs faster than a single drive. A SIMPLE FILE COPY from drive to drive shows the speed increase is dramatic.

NOTE: RAID-0 is not redundant and does not protect your data like RAID-1. RAID-0 is all about speed so use it for creating video-data and be sure to do backups.

(NOTE: RAID SETUP will be discussed in future blog.)

Nero's Tips #3 - How to convert from PAL to NTSC

This is probably the easiest of Nero's tips so far, and probably the
easiest one for futures, too. However, it's an important one, because
it's a question lots of folks seem to have:

How do I convert my movies from PAL to NTSC and vice-versa?

Easy as pie. First, open up Nero Vision. Next, click on the "More" button:

<a style="display:block;text-align:center;float: left" uri="media://m103/st0000/7200074" href="http://m103.my.nero.com/service/pic/media/c5SY7200074/500x500/PALNTSC1.jpeg" rel="lightbox[piccbdb9260934baf6c5b26ce7adce74b82]" title="
PALNTSC1.jpg
">

From here, simply click on "Default Video Options" in the menu that pops up, simply use the pulldown menu to choose the country you're interested in converting to, and go burn!

<a style="display:block;text-align:center;float: left" uri="media://m103/st0000/7200075" href="http://m103.my.nero.com/service/pic/media/Ln7j7200075/500x500/PALNTSC2.jpeg" rel="lightbox[piccbdb9260934baf6c5b26ce7adce74b82]" title="
PALNTSC2.jpg
">

That's it. You can do this anytime before the burn process starts, even after you've already edited your video.
