Internet Explorer 6 is holding back the future.

IE6 is the bane of every web developer's life. Released in 2001, IE6 fails to even properly support the CSS 1.0 standard from 1996.

Supporting IE6 prevents us from using cool new features, standard with up to date browsers. This erodes user-experience for everyone. Additionally, the hacks and workarounds that web designers are forced to use degrades their code, and this limits progress in other areas. Above all it's simply a waste of millions of hours of human potential.

Please help to free the web from IE6

Dear Internet Explorer 6 User,

Please, please, please, for the love of all that is good and pure in this world, switch to any browser other than IE6. Whether it's simply upgrading to IE7 or even better, moving over to Firefox or perhaps Opera, doing so would help to bring a significant measure of sanity back to the world of each and every standards-conscious web geek.

I don't expect you to understand or even care about web standards and all the web geek talk that goes along with it. But please know that web standards are very important to many, many web designers and developers and the browser you're currently using blatantly ignores standards and has been draining the life out of these same designers/developers for years.

By switching over to another browser and leaving IE6 in the gutter where it belongs, as a user you’re helping to improve the web.

So why should you care if web designers and developers are having too deal with problems inherent to IE6? If you can sense pain and misery in another living thing, then that should be enough. But if you're more mercenary, then think of all the time and effort currently being spent on dealing with IE6-specific problems actually being redirected into more improvements in developing a more feature-rich online experience.

By switching over to another browser and leaving IE6 in the gutter where it belongs, as a user you're helping to improve the web. I mean it. And it's even possible that if the majority of users stop using IE6, it might encourage more designers and developers to be less sloppy and finally pay attention to web standards like they should.

Think of it another way. Imagine that every time you send an email, you have to create three or maybe four separate versions of the exact same message just to be sure the person or persons you're sending it to can actually read it and not go insane. I know, it sucks! This is essentially what designers/developers have to do now because of the differences between browsers and IE6 being the worst of them.

Seriously, could you please, please, please switch over to another browser?

After hours of debate over the appropriate length of time to ban Internet access taxes, members of a House committee on Wednesday approved a bill that would extend the Internet tax moratorium for an additional four years.

Instead of extending the moratorium on Internet access taxes for four years, They had an option to stop it all together.

But as we have seen all to often, Pass the buck, Slide it under the Rug and Wait 4 more years to talk about it.

In addition to the extension issue, H.R. 3678 also includes a definition of Internet access as a service that enables a user to connect to the Internet. ((WHAT!!))
Taxes and other government-imposed charges can boost your phone and cable TV bills by 20% or more.

As a Business Owner, and as most everyone with a close Eye on this, The Effects can be costly and Hinder Services.

Just as the Age of Internet shopping and communications Explode. Allot might be stopped In there tracks before they can even try to market new products and services, due to a excise tax for even getting on the Net to check your email.

(Don't get this Confused with not having to pay taxes for items purchased, It is still under control of your state if taxes are imposed, but we will have to pay a tax to use the internet that wasn't there before, and this can increase your monthly service bill)

The Internet Tax Freedom Act goes to the House Next for a full vote.

The Ban on Internet Taxes Seems Safe, But its the Added extra that was included that could increase your bill.

Ipod USB Charger Intertnet purchases

This internet purchase was less successful,USB charger for iPod.This was cheap at AU$0.99 plus frieght from Hong Kong but did not work,do not know why as it appears new and in good order? This guys site has some interesting items very cheap,but I guess you gets what you pay for.

For all you Americans out there, keep in mind that the Internet Tax Moratorium (which prevents the government of your State or the Fed) from taxing your internet service, is about to expire.

For those of us who basically live our lives online, this is an important issue -- no matter which way you feel about it. Make sure you read up on the news and the debates going on in Congress, and then write your Senators and let them know which way you think they ought to vote.

This is no joke folks! One of the few "civic duty" posts you'll ever see the NeroDude make. ;-)

Verizon FiOS

Any one out there in Nero Land have Verizon FiOS? How do you like it?

I just signed up for it today - to be installed 9/20.

It's only offered in limited areas that I know of. I was going to sign up for it back in January when it first came to my neighborhood but the only deal they were offering on the internet was 5/2 Mbps. I already had Comcast 8 Mbps/768 kbps so I didn't want to go down in speed. Priced out the whole 15/2 Mbps and tv bit back then and I would have paid more than what my phone bill & Comcast bill totaled were - so I decided to wait.

Now they have the 15/2 Mbps plan plus all the channels and more that I get Comcast for $180 - including the phone plan. Hell that's what I pay Comcast now. Having everything w/ Verizon will now save me $60 per month.

The catch - free install only for 3 rooms, a 2 year agreement w/ a $149 cancellation fee and a $19.95 activation fee So I have to pay an extra $20 per room - no biggie plus in the long run I'm still saving money - my favorite thing :)

Updating Nero through Internet

Hello, I try to update product through Nero ProductSetup. Unfortunately it does not work. I faced this problem for the first time in Nero 7.0.5.4. But in Nero 7.9.6.0 problem remains.

When I start Nero ProductSetup I see this screen ...

I press "Yes". Then Nero tries to check for new updates ...

I press "Ok". But it fails because of Internet connection ...

My Internet connection is OK. I can use browser, e-mail client, ICQ, Messenger, Skype ... But Nero ProductSetup can't update my Nero!!! Why? Who knows?

I am behind the firewall. All ports are opened for outgoing connection, but all ports are closed (except certain ports) for incoming connection from Internet. My Internet Explorer uses proxy to connect to Internet. May be I should open some ports?

PS: I tested this feature with Nero 7.0.5.4, 7.2.0.3, 7.2.3.2b, 7.5.9.0, 7.7.5.1, 7.8.5.0 and 7.9.6.0 on Windows XP SP2.

Do you know GoogleFight ? It's not an application from Google, but it shows a fight between two searchwords and the winner is the one with more results. Just type in the two word you want to fight against each other and click on "Make a fight".

Try it out with "Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader", "beer vs. wine" or even with your nickname versus mine ;) .

Steve jobs announced today that Safari (Apple's web browser) is available on the PC. you can download it here . Odd to see - I really don't know what to make of this. I always thought of Safari as a terrible browser on the mac so it will be interesting to see how it does on the PC. It is fast that's for sure.

Do you know Google Suggest ? It's a really nice feature to Google's Websearch that Autocompletes your searchstring with similiar searches other users have done.

So let's try out what others have searched for - try typing "my girlfriend is" or "my boyfriend is" or even "no beer" . If you find also funny strings - post in in the comments ;)

Internet Speed Record

Some researchers in Japan have apparently recently broken the Internet speed record. They've transfered a piece of data over 20,000 miles at a rate of 9.08 Gigabits per second. If that means nothing to you, just be aware that it's really, really, really fast.
