Authoring Videos with Nero Vision - Capturing Video

Nero Vision can seem daunting with all its options for video editing and authoring, but Nero's worked hard to make the program as easy to use as possible for the average dude. If you're interested in using Nero for video editing, but haven't been able to get beyond the basics of StartSmart yet, I'm going to give you a quick walkthrough of some of the functionality here, so that you can get started. There's a lot more in-depth stuff you'll be able to do down the road, but in this blog I just want to give you a kick start. This first section will start with capturing video from your camera.

Getting Started

So, the first thing to do is start up Nero Vision (I'll be working with Nero Vision 5 for this blog, but any recent version will be pretty compatible with what I'm talking about here). From here, you're either going to want to capture video off of one of your devices (that is, you'll want to transfer video you've recorded on a camera and pull it over to your local computer), or you'll want to open a video that you've already got on your hard drive. For now, let's assume you're going to capture a video.

Capturing Video

First things first: make sure you've got your camera connected to your PC (usually via USB), and that it's being recognized by Windows. If it's not, you'll need to deal with driver installation and Windows troubleshooting, which are unfortunately outside the scope of this blog. But, assuming everything's hunky dory, you'll want to click the "Capture Video to Hard Drive" option from Nero Vision's opening screen.

From here, you've got two options. You can either record live video from your device directly to your hard disk (this is useful if you're using a webcam, for example), or you can simply capture video that you've already recorded. If you want to do the former, simply check to make sure the device is transmitting data to your PC (which you can check by looking at the video window and seeing if you're getting a live feed) and then click the record button on the console. FYI, the record button looks like a red circle with another white circle inside it. Once you're done recording, hit the stop button and you're ready to edit the video you've just captured. Don't forget that you can configure the quality and format of the video you'll be capturing by using the pull-down menus on the right side of your Nero Vision window -- we'll cover exactly what these options do in the next blog on this subject.

If you'd like to capture video you've already recorded, the process is very similar. Simply tell Nero Vision which device you'd like to capture from (you can select this from the pull-down menu above the video window labeled "Capture Device"). Then, configure the quality and format settings using the pulldowns and the "Configure" button, respectively. Once you're satisfied that you're getting the right video, just hit the record button, and you're all set. Vision will grab the video from your camera and put it on your hard drive.

One nifty thing to take note of: look for the little "stopwatch" button on the right of the recording console underneath the video window. This button allows you to capture or record video for a designated period of time. Just click it and tell Vision how long you'd like to record before it automatically stops, or for what periods of time you'd like to capture video from your device.

One you've gotten your video onto your hard disk, Vision will automatically give it a name (you can change the default filename by clicking on it once and typing the new name in the field), and will give you a prompt to move on to editing the video by clicking "Next." If you'd rather capture something else, or recapture the video in another format, just click the "Capture Another Video" option on the lefthand navigation. Otherwise, click next and move into the editing area of Nero Vision, which is where we'll pick up this blog series next time! Stay tuned.

See you next time!

Questions? Comments? Please leave them below by clicking "Comment!"

Problem Creating DVD after editing home video solved, figured out

Had been working on trying to get my home video and pictures, which I processed and edited through Nero Vision to burn on a dvd to work on a stand alone system off the computer. After many dvd discs and trial and error, found the solution. The dvd would work great on the pc but that was it. Come to find out, what you have to do to get it to work on a stand alone system is to 1st make sure you select more on the bottom of the screen and go to options, make sure you choose the ntsc. When you go to burn the movie itself there's a block that comes up and you need to make sure you click on the record setting and make sure you click burn at once (this will finalize the disc) and you can view it on most dvd players and other computers. But remember once finalized that dvd will not be able to be edited or added to.

Disneyography

There are many uses for video editing software. One of my favorite uses it editing my travel videos for display on You Tube and Yahoo Video.

You can use nero to accomplish this as it not only has an editor but also a converter so that you can upload your video in the best format for the particular video site.

I have uploaded a sample that I made using multiple programs for special effects. I used nero for some conversions and other software for titling.

If you check out my You Tube and Yahoo Video sites by just searching google or yahoo for rdsvideo1, you will see the many uses you can have for Nero.

Top 10 Video Effects

Most editing systems include a multitude of video effects and
transitions you can use to jazz up your video projects. The ones below
are classics that you'll find yourself using over and over again.

1. Dissolves

Any
time you have a cut that looks or sounds abrupt, try adding a dissolve
to smooth the transition. This effect blends the two video clips
together so that audiences barely notice the change.

2. Old Movie

The Old Movie
effect adds noise, shake and dust to your video, making it look as if
it's playing on an old projector. This effect is meant to add a
nostalgic feel, but it can also be used to cover up mistakes made
during filming (such as camera shakiness or a dirty lens).

3. Black & White

Making
your footage black and white can add drama or nostalgia to your movie.
This is also a handy effect to use if the color of your footage is off!

4. Split Screen

This effect lets you show two videos at once. It's a creative way to tell a story by showing multiple viewpoints. 24 is a great program to watch for getting ideas on using a split screen.
iMovie doesn't have an easy-to-apply split screen effect, but if you get creative with the Push video transition you can get the idea of a split screen

.5. Widescreen

Black
bars at the top and bottom of the screen give your movie a Hollywood
style widescreen look. Make sure, though, that you don't cut off
anyone's head in the process!

6. Fast Motion

Fast
motion is a creative way to indicate the passage of time. Accelerated
clouds, city traffic or crowds of people are all good candidates for
this effect.

Fast motion is also great for showing the progression of a project.
Keep your video camera fixed on an object as it is being constructed or
assembled, then speed it up to show the entire process in a matter of
minutes or seconds.

7. Slow Motion

Slowing
down a video can enhance emotional and dramatic moments. Try it in
wedding videos or flashback scenes. And don't forget comedy--funny
moments are often even more hilarious when seen in slow-mo!

8. Fade In & Fade Out

You'll
notice that most professional videos begin and end with a black screen.
It's easy to give your projects this same professional look by adding a
Fade In at the start of the video and a Fade Out at the end.

Learn more about iMovie video effects:

9. Superimpose

Superimposing
one video image on top of another can be a little bit tricky, but it is
a powerful tool if used properly. Be careful where you apply it; if the
scenes are too busy it won't work well. Montages or transitions from
one scene to another tend to be good moments for this effect.

10. Iris

This
effect creates a circular frame around your video. Use it to give your
movie an old fashioned feel; focus viewers' attention on important
scenic elements; or cut out anything unwanted at the edge of the frame.

excerpt from: http://desktopvideo.about.com/od/desktopediting/tp/topeffects.htm

What About this NERO *

I uploaded this as a test and wanted to see if it was going to hold up in quality.

I'm just getting familier with Nero as an Edit Program (Vision5) and I must say, I am NOT impressed.

The first assignment is to extract clips from the Client's DVD and re-arrange them. Not as easy as one would like!!

Bring in the footage--Import/Recode; The movie is broken down into PARTS; maximum length of 1 G. You have no control over the size or where the break is. Within the Part, there are SEGMENTS, up to 34 or so. Again, I have no idea what drives the break points. Fine...

But enter Edit Mode (Vision5) and try to make those breaks go away--they do not. You will see a drop into black at each transition where you would want to have a seamless join. Why on the trailing edge of a segment? The leading edge and the Audio track seem unaffected.

This alone makes the program useless as a compiler. I want the ability to take a non-copy protected DVD or camcorder tape, bring it into the Asset Area, drag it to the Timeline or Storyboard, and reassemble it intact.

Any comments?

SRC

SOLUTION TO PROBLEM OF NOT BEING ABLE TO OPEN FILES WITH NEROPHOTOSNAP VIEWER

Thanks to Art, who forwarded me this and helped solve my problem to not being able to open photo files with PhotoSnap Viewer.

Here is what i did:

Open PhotoSnap Viewer. Click on File and then scroll down to Configure Plug-ins and click on it....

Highlight the
first entry C:\Program files etc etc...then click Unregister Plug In. (Another user suggested to click Unregister All, i clicked Unregister Plug in by accident and it worked so i don't know about that) Close Photosnap Viewer then reopen it and you should be able to open any picture.

thanks,

Geri

I have been using Nero PhotoSnap Viewer (Nero 7) to open and edit all my picture files with no problems for the last several months since i've had it, then from one day to the next, it stopped working.Whenever i try and open a file and choose the Nero program to do it, i get a message on my screen saying "File C: Documents and settings\my documents\name of file\.jpg could not be opened"

The Nero PhotoSnapViewer dialog box opens up, but it is blank with the above message.

Does anyone know how i can fix this? I've sent an email to tech support as there is no hotline i can call for my country and i have been waiting over a week now for a response.

thanks if anyone can offer assistance.

geri

Fabulous Video Editing for Free

Hello,

This is a bit cheeky because I am going to unnecessarily direct you to my website !!

If you go to http://the-kellys.co.uk/download/mm.html you will see a flash video. I downloaded the original from the link you will find underneath it. The original was something like 800 x 600. I resampled it and converted it to flash so that I could use it as an advert.

Whats very special is that the people in the video are also the people that wrote the video editing software that was used to create the video itself..

All a bit confusing ??? Go take a look and go to their website and get the latest version of the editing program. Its free. It has many very high end features making it mind blowing. The video, which you should watch all the way to the end demonstrates most of those features. The video is great and the software it demonstrates is WOW !

Great Example of Home Special Effects

This week, my theme has kinda been videos that regular folks do on their own, using little extra equipment or post-processing special effects. Stuff you guys can do easily on your own using a good Digital Camcorder and Nero Vision.

But the one "special effect" you'll always need if you want to make anything worth watching is imagination. You can have a gajillion dollars worth of bluescreen and CGI, and end up like the Star Wars prequels -- yeeech, OR you can do what these guys did, come up with a funky idea, and make a really cool music video (I apologize for the bubble-gum pop annoyance of the actual song, but take a look at the video itself).

Sorry there's no embedding. I couldn't get the code to work.

Anyway, this effect is relatively easy to achieve with a lot of good planning and coordination. It works well for music videos (for example, Weird Al did a similar effect in his video for "Amish Paradise"), but there's many applications that regular users like you can do. Making use of cropping and speed adjustment in Nero Vision (as well as using other tools as you would normally) will make your life a lot easier if you want to do something like this.

Well, the NeroDude is pretty good with editing videos in Nero Vision. At least, I thought I was -- I thought I had some skills -- until I saw the below piece. Not only is it an amazing concept, but it's uses some clever video editing techniques and turns out generally both enjoyable and impressive in its execution.

For example, take note of the way that the editor digitally "washed" all three films with the same yellow-green filter to make them match. Also look at the way he clever uses repeats and reverse angles.

The Internet is a powerful tool, and with digital editing like this, we're looking at a new era of art and film production. Anyway, enjoy:

<ncs:embed ncs:value="EMBED_931920995467ff8b1e3d08"><embed wmode="transparent" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aTUbYw_Xvhg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350" ></embed></ncs:embed>
